Nationwide Campaign Newsletter: Hop the Gap

posted Feb 26, 2015, 10:57 AM by Jonathan Yoesting   [ updated Feb 26, 2015, 11:03 AM ]

When children and teens are out of school, they can face barriers related to hunger, health, learning, water safety and accessing safe spaces, which prevent them from reaching their full potential.

HTG_Girl_Purple_CropTo help the public better understand how the Y responds to these complex issues impacting youth, YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) will launch a summerlong promotional campaign called Hop the Gap on April 25. We'll use "hopping" activities and games like hopscotch as a metaphor for how we help kids overcome barriers--or hop gaps--to achieve more. By engaging members, parents, donors, program participants and community partners in fun activities at the national and local level, we'll build greater awareness and support for our cause.

Hop the Gap activities can easily be integrated into existing Y initiatives and programs from Healthy Kids Day® to day camp. Be sure to watch the short video above and then learn more by visiting Exchange and participating in the first Hop the Gap webinar at 2 p.m. (CT) March 3, which will provide activation ideas and tips for bringing Hop the Gap to life in your community.

Why_I_Give_video"Why I Give," the first Living Our Cause Movement-wide engagement activity in 2015 is designed to help all staff and volunteers understand their role in fulfilling our cause, show their passion for our organization and share impact stories of our charitable work. In support of Nationwide Campaign (NWC), this activity is a fun opportunity for staff and volunteers to intentionally reflect on and share why they support the Y as a cause and give to their Ys' annual campaigns. Watch the "Why I Give" video and then find details and materials on Exchange to help implement and share "Why I Give" at your Y. Remember to use #BeCauseY and #YMCA when sharing six-word stories on social media.

  • Hop the Gap overview and FAQ are available on Exchange.
  • 2015 Annual Campaign Kickoff webcast recording (Feb. 16) featuring Y-USA President and CEO Kevin Washington is available on Exchange.
  • "Why I Give" engagement activity  gives staff and volunteers an opportunity to reflect on and share why they support the Y as a cause and give to the annual campaign. Learn more.

  • March 3: "Wave 2: Activating Hop the Gap at Your Y," webinar will introduce planned activities and resources to help YMCAs bring Hop the Gap to life. Learn more.
  • March 3: Hop the Gap activation guide and select resources will be available on Exchange and the Brand Resource Center (BRC).
  • April 25: Hop the Gap promotional campaign launches on Healthy Kids Day (and continues through August).
  • May 6: "Hop the Gap: Summer Check-In," webinar will share the latest campaign information, tips and resources. Learn more.

Can my Y continue to use Wave 1 membership materials after Wave 2 begins?

Yes! Engaging new members is a year-round effort, and Wave 1 materials are designed to create a deeper understanding of and connection to the Y as more than a place. Visit the BRC to find new member communications tools and member engagement social media posts to help people understand how they can do and achieve more with the Y.

Gift Cards are Here!

Gift Cards!  Gift Cards! Gift Cards!

It’s Just What They Want!   Choosing the ideal gift has never been easier.  Gift Cards are the flexible and convenient gift that everyone loves!  A gift card gives both the recipient and the gift giver complete flexibility and convenience.

Our YMCA Gift Cards have arrived!  In the interoffice mail, I am sending you everything the branch will need to sell a gift card to a member.    In the envelope you will find:

  1.  Gift Cards, these cards have no value until a member has purchased and funds have been “loaded” onto the magnetic strip of the card.  As you deplete your inventory please contact me and I will restock your supply.

  2. Gift Card Envelopes, an all occasion envelope to complete the gift card presentation.   During the gift card sale, please write the monetary value of the gift card on the amount line on the inside of the envelope.

  3. A magnetic card reader.  This device will need to be plugged into one of your Welcome Center computers.  Additional card readers will be available upon request.

  4. The SOP for selling a gift card to a member. (also attached to this e-mail)

  5. The SOP for redeeming the gift card as a form of payment.  (also attached to this e-mail)

  6. The SOP for checking the balance on a card. (also attached to this e-mail)

  7. YMCA of the Oranges Gift Card Rules.  (also attached to this e-mail)

All gift card revenue is recognized in a YMCA balance sheet account.  The proceeds from the sale of a gift card are not branch revenue until the gift card is redeemed as a payment type for a service, program, membership or merchandise purchased at your branch.  When the gift card is used as a form of payment, the money that had been “loaded” onto the gift card will move from the balance sheet account to your branch revenue associated with the service or merchandise sold.  Therefore, gift cards can be easily purchased at one branch and redeemed at another branch.
